What is AAC?

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), also known as autoclaved cellular concrete, autoclaved lightweight concrete. Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is a certified green building material and AAC blocks used for walls, floors, and roofs. Due to light weight material it seems excellent sound, thermal insulation, and like all cement-based materials, is strong and fire resistant. It was invented in the mid-1920s by the Swedish architect and inventor Johan Axel Eriksson. It is a lightweight, precast building material that simultaneously provides structure, insulation, fire resistance, Construction Economy and Speed. It has been refined into a highly thermally insulating concrete-based material used for both internal and external construction. AAC products include blocks, wall panels, floor and roof panels, and lintels. Besides AAC's insulating capability, one of its advantages in construction is its quick and easy installation; the material can be routed, sanded, and cut to size on site using standard carbon steel band saws, hand saws, and drills.

COMPARISON - AAC Blocks Vs Clay Bricks

Parameter AAC Blocks Clay Bricks
Soil Consumption Zero soil consumption. Primary raw material for AAC blocks is fly ash. This fly ash is industrial waste generated by coal-based thermal power plants. One sq ft of carpet area with clay brick walling will consume 25.5 kg of top soil.
Fuel Consumption One sq ft of carpet area with AAC blocks will consume 1 kg of coal. One sq ft of carpet area with clay bricks will consume 8 kg of coal.
CO2 Emission One sq ft of carpet area will emit 2.2 kg of CO2. One sq ft of carpet area will emit 17.6 kg of CO2.
Labour Organized sector with proper HR practices. Unorganized sector with rampant use of child labour.
Production Facility State-of-the-art factory facility. Unhealthy working conditions due to toxic gases.
Tax Contribution Contributes to government taxes in form of Central Excise, VAT and Octroi. Does not contribute to government exchequer.
Size 600 / 625 mm x 200 / 240 mm x 100-300 mm 225 mm x 100 mm x 65 mm

Benefits Of AAC Blocks

  • Environmental friendly and non-toxic : From the manufacturing process to shipment, construction, and waste disposal is in ecological balance.
  • Ensures high standard of well-being : Reduces temperature differences and humidity fluctuations and so ensures a comfortable and healthy room atmosphere.
  • Good sound absorption-effective sound barrier : The natural air cushion formed in the high-pressure steam curing of AAC can absorb the most possible noise.
  • Outstanding thermal insulation : Keeps buildings cool in summer and warm in winter saving on heating and air-conditioning.
  • Excellent workability : It is easy to erect a solid masonry structure quickly and precisely. Only few tools for Implements are necessary.
  • Performs well in earthquakes : Plastic deformation properties of blocks can minimize destructive force of Earthquakes
  • Light weight : Due to light weight of concrete construction is easy.
  • Fire Resistant : This Advantage of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete is Totally Inorganic and is incombustible. The Product is especially suited for Fire-rated Applications.
  • Good ventilation : AAC Wall self-adjusts the humidity by absorbing moisture and releasing humidity automatically helps prevent condensation and problems related to mildew.
  • Long Life : Autoclaved Aerated Concrete products are not affected by harsh climatic conditions and will not degrade under normal atmospheric condition.
  • High Accuracy : The accurate manufacturing process ensures that Autoclaved Aerated Concrete panels and blocks are always produced to size as they leave the factory. This results in less on-site trimming and reduced quantities of mortar and finishing materials use.
